Trip to Fresno

At the College of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, Bob joined the Archanian fraternity, Alpha Kappa Phi. The brothers there formed a fast friendship with Bob that lasted his whole life long. We sailed with him and visited him and Margie and he often came to be with us at our ski ventures at Tahoe.

Like Bob, several of his brothers, including me, were active Rotarians. Bob was clearly the most devoted because one of the main Rotary projects is the eradication of polio world wide.

We were sailing with several of the brothers when I extracted his promise to come to Fresno and speak before our large Rotary club, telling his very interesting life's story.

Within the year, Bob fulfilled his promise. A number of our brothers from around the state drove in to see him. His presentation received warm appreciation. A video tape of that event later helped his recognition as a distinguished alum of our university when brother Easterbrook nominated him.

While here in Fresno, Bob saw something that he wanted to try. Bob was always game for an adventure and was fearless, but what he wanted to do seemed harmless enough. We have a spa at our house and Bob wanted in to see if he might want to get one for himself. So we stripped down and Bob sat on the edge of the spa, then flopped backwards into the steaming water, just like he did from the Spirit Wind.

We enjoyed visiting as we sipped a glass of wine until we were ready to get out.

“How do we do this?” I asked. “I have no idea,” he replied. “On the boat I have a hoist that will wench me up out of the sea.”

Well, we did get him out without injury. It involved moving in a sofa and employing a large number of pillows.

What a guy! What a friend! A great brother!

And, Margie, all the brothers are so grateful to you for your love and support of our brother Bob. You have become dear to our hearts. Your faith endures.
